Founded in 2006, we strive to be the preferred and trusted provider of specialist construction and engineering insurance solutions in Africa and selected international markets.

As a division of Santam, the leading general insurer in South Africa, we have unmatched experience and expertise and an extensive network in Africa in partnership with Sanlam Allianz and Sanlam Emerging Markets International.

Mirabilis offers facultative reinsurance in Africa, the Middle East, India and the sub-continent, Central and South-East Asian markets.

We are based in South Africa with our Head Office in Johannesburg and branches in Cape Town, Durban, and a representative office in London. Our team includes engineers with practical onsite experience and in-depth expertise in contract works and operational risks.

Our history

2006 Mirabilis was founded.
2011 Mirabilis partnered with the largest insurer Santam and acquired CEU from Santam.
2011 Santam acquired majority shareholding in Mirabilis.
2014 Mirabilis expands its scope outside Africa to international territories in the Middle East, India
and South East Asia
2017 S&P rated security via agreement with Munich Re of Africa.
2020 Mirabilis enters into an agreement with New Reinsurance Company Limited (NewRe). NewRe authorises Mirabilis to act as its Agent to underwrite and accept, on its behalf, engineering classes of reinsurance business.
2021 Mirabilis becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Santam.
2024 Mirabilis becomes a division of Santam.

Corporate social responsibility

Mirabilis believes that change starts with us. We have partnered with Meals on Wheels in fighting hunger in South Africa. This initiative reaches out to communities and supports sustainable food through community food gardens.

Another cause supported by Mirabilis and its staff is Babies Behind Bars. This initiative provides the necessary resources for babies born and in the care of their imprisoned mothers.


As a signatory to the Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) initiative, we share their vision in creating a risk-aware environment, in which the insurance industry is trusted, and plays a meaningful role in enabling a healthy, safe, resilient, and sustainable society. We support continued understanding, prevention and reduction in ESG risks, to better manage opportunities and to provide quality and dependable risk protection.
